First impressions lasts they say, whether it is meeting a client for the first time, a first date with your crush or just a friendly meet up between two new friends, we all want to have that perfect smile. Without shiny white teeth we would be conscious and not give the best smile we have. Americans are so conscious about their teeth that every year they spend at least a billion dollars on dental bleaching (teeth whitening) and over the counter teeth whitening products.
Dental bleaching used to be a very expensive procedure. Nowadays with the advancement of technology and the proliferation of so many over the counter products have give people who want to have whiter teeth so many options to choose from.
The main ingredient used in dental bleaching is carbomide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide, the latter is much stronger in effect than the former. Hydrogen peroxide are mostly used by cosmetic dentist. Though there is no known really harmful side effects of dental bleaching, here are some pros and cons on the issue.
a) Dental bleaching can be done cheaply nowadays by using over the counter products or bleaching kits provided by a cosmetic dentist thereby giving you the option of doing it over a period of time in the comforts of your home.
b) Dental bleaching will give you that killer smile you’ve always wanted. Gives you more confidence when speaking with other people.
c) Though it is much cheaper to use over the counter teeth whitening products, there is simply a risk that the product you are using might cause you some discomfort (some people have sensitive gums) and even may have opposite effect on your teeth due to the level of peroxide concentration in the said product.
d) Without the sound advice from a cosmetic dentist, you may overuse the teeth whitening product causing your teeth to become transparent with the slight blue color and will sometimes lead to highly sensitive teeth instead.
e) Some over the counter teeth whitening products will proclaim that it is 100 percent effective to whiten your teeth but there are simply some stains that cannot be removed. Without you knowing this you will over use the product and damage your teeth instead.
f) Some over the counter dental bleaching products will say they are FDA approved but in reality some of these products are not FDA tested so be careful and choose wisely the product you are going to use.
g) Discoloration in dental work like crowns and veneers cannot be whitened by dental bleaching.
There simply is no way to stop teeth from losing its whiteness even if you have bleach it. Foodstuff like red wine, cola and beer tend to discolor your teeth. Smoking can do that to your teeth also. As we age our teeth will also get discolored naturally but you can still use dental bleaching but the effect of whitening is slower in older people as compared to younger people. Just don’t bleach your teeth to often. It would be advisable to do it every few months.
